SPENCER - The Estherville Lincoln Central cross country teams competed in their second meet of the year and their second within three days at Spencer on Thursday.

The Midgets fared fairly well.

The ELC girls finished in fifth place with 141 points. Western Christian won with 45 points followed by Spencer with 49, Algona with 53 and Spirit Lake with 87.

The ELC boys placed ninth with 206 points.

"They looked better-they may not have done better, but I was glad to see the intensity and the drive to race," said ELC coach Tina Burton. "We need to work on racing confidence.

Heather Natterstad led the ELC girls' pack with a 20th-place finish in 17 minutes, 51 seconds. Rachel Bates finished 25th in 18:03, Caressa Franklin finished 29th in 18:17, Vanessa Blanco finished 32nd in 18:38 and Hallie Jensen placed 35th in 19 minutes.

Also, Brianna Enerson placed 38th in 19:06 and Colleen Humble placed 45th in 19:19.

In the boys' race, Lee Christensen turned in his second top 10 finish of the season as he placed eighth in 17:14. Tristan Fales finished 41st in 19:54, Kelly Clabaugh placed 45th in 20:09; Drew Condon placed 53rd in 21:16 and Dorde Komlen placed 59th in 23:18.

Also, Isaac Jorgenson place 60th in 23:21 and Alex Miller placed 61st in 23:35.

"We will be working on packing in both the boys and girls," said Burton. "They have to be able to compete with the top teams. We don't have a front-runner yet with the girls so they have to commit to sticking close together.

"For the boys, they have a front runner, the rest of the team just needs to bring themselves together," she continued. "It all starts in practice."

The Midgets host their meet at the Estherville Golf Course at 5 p.m., Tuesday.

The ELC Junior Varsity girls placed fifth with 143 points.

Taylor Karels led the JV as she placed seventh in 20 minutes flat. Cayli Newton placed 28th in 21:44, Melissa Gruwell placed 30th in 21:56, Emilee Olson placed 34th in 22:34, Jerica Walters placed 44th in 25:20 and Emily Slaughter placed 45th in 25:32.
