Thumbs up to the Emmet County Conservation Foundation for putting on a great Pioneer Day last Saturday, Sept. 21. It was a wonderful experience for young and old alike. It's important that we preserve our area history, and even more important to show young people why they need to know and understand the people who built this country.

Thumbs up to Ed Boucher on getting upgraded to a Silver Star for extraordinary valor during the Korean Conflict. Ed, who had previously received the Bronze Star, led a detachment of Marines and soldiers who carried nine Marines down a mountainside under enemy fire. His Bronze Star was upgraded to Silver, but he did not receive the medal until last week.
Thumbs down to the circumstances that made it take 63 years for Ed to get the medal he deserved.
