CHEROKEE - For the first time in several years, Spirit Lake won't send a full team to the state cross-country meet.
But the Indians will still be represented next Saturday in Fort Dodge with two individual qualifiers.
On Thursday, Tanner Goetsch took first in the Class 2A boys' state qualifying meet in Orange City while Dondi Schmidt placed eighth in the girls' race to earn a return trip to state.
Goetch won the field with ease as he finished the 5-kilometer course in 16 minutes, 17 seconds-34 seconds ahead of second-place Haile Duden of Sioux Center.
The Spirit Lake boys placed fifth overall with 120 points behind Unity Christian (58 points), South Central Calhoun (96), OA-BCIG (102) and Western Christian (114). The top three teams and the top 10 individuals qualify for the state meet.
Also for Spirit Lake, Ryan Maris placed 20th in 17:44.6, Alec Harrington placed 30th in 18:12.6, Jason Feather placed 34th in 18:22.2 and Kyle Anderson placed 35th in 18:24.2. Also Josh Waite placed 36th in 18:26.9 and Hunter Davis placed 42nd in 18:57.7.
In the girls' race, Spirit Lake was a distant fourth with 121 points behind the top three teams-Unity Christian (48 points), Western Christian (60) and South Central Calhoun (65).
Schmidt's time of 15:50.7 kept her in the top 10 as all Top 10 runners finished the 4-Kilometer course in less than 16 minutes.
Lucy O'Hagan placed 15th in 16:30.1 while Hazkhett Zeledon placed 16th in 16:3.8 Ashley Brooks placed 37th in 17:29.1 and Ally Whiting placed 45th in 17:43.
Also, Rebekah Olson placed 53rd in 18:07.1 and Meghan Wickham placed 57th in 18:14.6.
The Class 2A state girls' race starts at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 2 at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge with the boys' race starting at 1:30 p.m.
