Thumbs up, thumbs down

Estherville News

Thumbs up to Northwest Bank and the Dickinson County Museum for donating 120 Iowa history books to Estherville Lincoln Central fifth-graders. It's community-minded groups such as this that really give us a sense of community.

Thumbs up to Iowa Lakes Community College music students, alumni and community members for putting on a great coffee house last Saturday.

Thumbs up to the Emmet County Water Trails Association on making great plans at its annual meeting this past Monday. This coalition from a lot of different sectors of the community is going to make a big difference in what the Des Moines River means to Emmet County.

Thumbs up to the Armstrong-Ringsted Board of Education for steering through the shoals that naturally come with the future consolidation with Sentral. North Union is already one of the best small to mid-sized schools in Iowa in its use of technology in the classroom.

Thumbs up to the Emmet County Board of Supervisors for keeping a sharp eye on taxpayers' money. At Tuesday's board meeting, the supervisors did not rubber stamp approval of a bid for the Armstrong shop addition that was $24,000 over the engineer's estimate. That's a good reason to table approval and ask why.

Thumbs up to the Estherville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Friends of Fort Defiance for a great Fright Hike Halloween night. Some things never change - namely, the eternal desire for kids to have the living daylights scared out of them.

Thumbs up to the Estherville Parks and Recreation Board, city officials and all other who helped put up the new playground equipment at Trinity Park on Friday and today. The Parks and Rec Board does a good job of planning park improvements and sticking to that plan.
