The Estherville PROSPER Team has declared February PROSPER month and are excited about the many events planned to celebrate.
Because of the PROSPER partnership, the Estherville community has been fortunate to have had the Strengthening Families Program: For Parents and Youth 10-14 (SFP 10-14) available to sixth graders and their families and the All Stars Program for seventh graders for the past twelve years.
Both of these programs are "evidence-based" curricula that have been proven effective in increasing the resistance to peer pressure in youth, lowering levels of aggression, increasing the ability of parents to set appropriate limits and show affection and support of their children, and delaying the onset of adolescent substance use. In fact, analyses by researchers at the Partnerships in Prevention Science Institute (PPSI) at Iowa State University found a return of $9.60 for every dollar spent implementing the SFP 10-14 Program.
Youth in PROSPER communities tend to be:
n Better at problem solving
n Less likely to hang out with classmates that get into trouble
n More likely to refuse offers of alcohol and other drugs
n Less likely to believe that substance use has positive effects
n More likely to delay initiation of substance use, or to use less frequently
n Less likely to engage in problem behaviors
The Strengthening Families Program 10-14 is being offered this winter to ELC 6th grade families. The overall goal for Strengthening Families is to help families communicate better with each other and to help the kids learn to communicate effectively with their peers. The program will be offered on Sunday evenings starting February 23 with a meal served at 5:00 pm and the program will be from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. This is a free program for families and free childcare is also provided for younger siblings. To register for this program contact myself at email@example.com or call (712) 362-3434.
The PROSPER Team will be holding a tailgate fundraiser on Tuesday, Feb. 11 from 5-8 p.m. during the ELC High School Varsity basketball game. Funds raised support the team's efforts and programs. Be sure to come out to support the efforts of the PROSPER Team! The PROSPER Team will also be presenting at the school board meeting and at Rotary discussing team efforts and programs offered.
