DES MOINES - Cody Thompson advanced into the medal round with a key victory in the Class 1A 285-pound second-round consolation match on Friday.
Thompson faced a familiar foe in his match in taking on Manson-Northwest Webster's Tim Butcher. Thompson had faced Butcher twice during the regular season, winning in a sudden victory in their first meeting and 3-2 in their second meeting.
The two heavyweights fought through a scoreless first period with Thompson scoring an escape and takedown in the second while building a 3-1 lead.

Two more takedowns in the final minute of the third period allowed Thompson to advance with a 7-4 victory.
Thompson (43-4), ranked eighth, was scheduled to face seventh-ranked Garrett Johnston (48-4) of Panorama late Friday evening in the Class 1A third-round consolation session.
Cody Thompson didn't have an easy start to the day, but the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire junior ended the first session of the Class 1A State WrestlingTournament in dramatic fashion.
The junior heavyweight needed just 8 seconds to defeat C-M-B, Baxter's Dawson Dahlke in the consolation round to keep his medal hopes alive. Dahlke finished his tournament with a 19-15 record. Thompson (42-4) awaits his chance to move into the medal round on Friday.
Thompson, ranked eighth, started the tournament against sixth-ranked Tyler Yonkovic of Maquoketa Valley. Yokovic, undefeated in 49 matches this season, scored the first points of the match with an escape in the second period. Thompson tied the match at 1-1 with an escape in the third period. Although both had been warned for stalling, Thompson was tagged with a stall call first as Yonkovic took a 2-1 lead. Forced to pick up the offense, Thompson ended up getting taken down as Yonkovic advanced with the 4-1 win.
