Thumbs up, thumbs down

Thumbs up to the kids who took part in Winter Survival Day last Saturday at the Emmet County Nature Center and a big thumbs up as well to Emmet County Conservation Board director Eric Anderson and naturalist Jenna Pollock.

Thumbs up to GKN on giving its latest round of grants to area organizations. Still again, GKN has proven its community-mindedness and commitment to making our area better.

Thumbs up to Emmet County employees for going over a year without a lost-time accident. This means savings in Workers' Compensation insurance - and ultimately savings to taxpayers.

Thumbs up to the Excel Estherville Arts & Culture Committee as it plans for the Opera Iowa production, The Elixer of Love, 7 p.m. Friday March 14 at Roosevelt Auditorium. A big thumbs up also has to go to Estherville Lincoln Central School District for offering the Opera Iowa production of The Three Little Pigs that afternoon.

Thumbs up to Britney Rosburg of Emmet County ISU Extension and Jody Monroe of Compass Pointe for their excellent presentation on the Prosper program Thursday at the Estherville Rotary Club. Prosper is a program open to ALL sixth-graders and includes the Strengthening Families program for sixth-graders and their families and the All-Stars program for seventh-graders. Anyone who has a sixth- or seventh-grader and who wants to have a stronger, happier and healthier family is encouraged to participate.

Thumbs up to the Estherville Police Department and other area and state law enforcement agencies for braving the bitter cold Wednesday night and Thursday morning when they responded to a tragedy in Estherville.

Thumbs up to the Estherville Area Chamber of Commerce on a great Farm and Home Show. The show continues until 2 p.m. this afternoon.

Thumbs up to all the dads and grandpas who attended Donuts with Dad at Estherville Lincoln Central elementary schools this week.

Thumbs up to Estherville Lincoln Central's Oscar Ramirez for placing second at the 2014 state wrestling tournament as well as the rest of teh area qualifiers and medalists.
