Thumbs up, thumbs down

Estherville News

Thumbs up to the North Union Board of Education for taking the proactive measure of paying off its debt early. That's exactly what the board decided to do Monday night. Their actions will save taxpayers $120,000 a year in interest. The board also deserves a pat on the back for working well together to help save taxpayers money and provide students with an excellent education.

A big thumbs up also has to go to Art Pixler who was chosen North Union elementary principal and Robert Zotz who was chosen high-school principal, also Monday night. In what could have been a difficult administrative reorganization process in other districts, everyone put their heads together to figure out what was best for North Union and its students. And these two dedicated professionals are most definitely the best people you could possibly find for the job.

Thumbs up to YMCA Kinship as it strives to recruit more mentors for Emmet and Dickinson counties. When Emmet County Kinship joined forces with the 'Y', it increased the recreational and learning opportunities for kids manifold.

Thumbs up to the Excel Estherville Arts & Culture Committee as it plans for arts events this coming summer. Look for some great entertainment with Music on the Square during Downtown Market.

Thumbs up to the candidates who filed papers for the upcoming June 3 primary election. We are a free society because we are governed by citizens just like ourselves who want to make like better for everyone.

Thumbs up to Dale Hustedt, the new administrator at Avera Holy Family Hospital. And welcome to Estherville!

Thumbs up to all the great organizations that participated in the Family Resource Fair Thursday at Estherville Lincoln Central High School. We are really lucky to have so many organizations whose main purpose is to help kids.

Thumbs up to RSVP volunteers who are being recognized this morning at a recognition breakfast at Iowa Lakes Community College. These are the people who grease the wheel so things can happen.

Thumbs up to the Emmet County Nature Center Foundation for putting on a great Nature Center banquet tonight at the Elks Lodge.
