Thumbs up, thumbs down

April 4, 2014
Estherville News

Thumbs up to the Emmet County Conservation Board on a great banquet last Saturday. With the Nature Center debt paid, money raised goes toward environmental education and a permanent endowment.

Thumbs up to the Black Knights Car Club for all the great activities they've held and are planning for the year. In addition to a dance with The Senders in March, they've scheduled two area car shows, cruises and drags this fall, making a major impact in the entertainment that's available in our area.

Thumbs up to the Emmet County Wellness Coalition for all the great wellness events they're holding, including the recently concluded Lifestyle Challenge in which participants lost 2,605.2 pounds.

Thumbs up to Pastor Joel Smeby, new pastor at Redeemer Lutheran; Envy Salon on its new location at 610 Central Ave.; and New 2U Consignments whom the Estherville Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors visited Wednesday.

Thumbs up to Ben Haigh upon receiving recognition from Gov. Terry Branstad from his years of service and dedication to the state of Iowa and Estherville. Ben has probably fostered more Estherville musicians than anyone.

Thumbs up to Estherville Lincoln Central students in grades 2-6 for the posters they made for Money Smart Week, April 5-12. The posters are displayed at both NorthStar Bank Estherville locations.

Thumbs up to Mike Sjoblom for donating the wood floor from the old Ringsted School gym to the Mankato nonprofit Leisure Education for Exceptional People.

Thumbs up to Estherville Good Samaritan Society volunteers who are being recognized at a volunteer brunch 11 a.m. Monday.

Thumbs up to ELC fifth-graders who are graduating from the D.A.R.E. program 5:30 p.m. Monday at Roosevelt Auditorium.

Thumbs up to the Hy-Vee Market Cafe on its opening this week. It's great to see another restaurant in Estherville.

Thumbs down to Mother Nature for causing late school starts and cancellations Friday. Hopefully, this is the last blast we'll get this spring.
