Plenty of weekend activities in store

May 2, 2014
Estherville News

If you're wondering what to do this weekend, why not hang around the area - because there's plenty to do right here at home. And everyone should be itching to get out of the house after five, straight days of rain.

For starters, there's the Iowa Junior High and High School Rodeo Saturday and Sunday at the Emmet County Fairgrounds.

Today's events start with girls and boys cutting events starting at 8 a.m. with the rodeo at 11:30. Sunday events start off with the barrels at 7:30 with the rodeo at 9:30.

The concession stand will be open both days, hosted by the Estherville Saddle Club.

If there's an all-American sport, it's rodeo. These young people are putting their all into these events, so it would be great if as many of us as possible could get out and show our support. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12. Preschool children are admitted free.

The Friends of Fort Defiance will dedicate the Whitetail Ridge Interpretive Trail at 1 p.m. Saturday. Years in the making, the Friends finished the trail last summer with assistance from a grant from the Emmet County Community Foundation.

If dancing is up your alley, the Eagle River Band is playing at the Estherville VFW from 8 p.m. to midnight. This Twin Cities-area band plays a lot of rock and country favorites, and they're sure to be a favorite themselves with the local crowd.

This is also Great Walleye Weekend at the Lakes, and there are likely to be plenty of anglers - both local and from outside the area - competing for prizes.

So if you're wondering what to do this weekend, just hang around and have a great time.
