OKOBOJI - A two-hour match between Estherville Lincoln Central's John Reisner and Spirit Lake-Okoboji's Will Fuelberth highlighted a night of several close matches. But when the dust had settled, Fuelberth came out on top and SL-O ended up winning the other close matches for an 8-1 victory.
"John played his best tennis of the year," said ELC coach Tony Klein. "He had a nice comeback in his singles match but fell a little short. That match was two hours long and then he came back and played great with Tim (Soper) to win the doubles match."
Reisner and Soper won 62-6-4 over Fuelberth and Jason Thorn to win that doubles match. Reisner's singles match ended in a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) loss.
In other singles play, Levi Jensen lost 7-5, 6-1 to Michael O'Brien; Thomas Bortvit lost 7-6 (7-4), 6-0) to Ryley Smith; Soper lost 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 1-0 (10-5) to Hunter Andreason; Drew Condon lost 6-2, 6-1 to Jason Thorn and Colton Christensen lost 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-7) to Calvin Fisher.
In doubles, Jensen and Bortvit lost 6-1, 6-2 to O'Brien and Smith while Condon and Kyle Marks lost 6-0, 6-2 to Andreason and Fisher.
"We're competitive but we have to start winning the tie-breaks," said Klein.
In junior varsity play, ELC lost 9-0. In singles, Alex Murillo lost 8-1, Jace Hobmeier lost 8-5, Jose Rodriguez lost 8-6, Jose Saavedra lost 8-1; Eli Gonzalez lost 8-3; Koby Schubert lost 8-6. In doubles, Murillo and Hobmeier lost 8-4; Rodriguez and Saavedra lost 8-3 and Gonzales and Schubert lost 8-3.
In exhibition play, Toby Jensen lost 6-2, Austin Wedebrand lost 6-2, Hunter Kompelien won 6-3 and Matthew Mustard lost 6-0. In doubles, Wedebrand and Jensen lost 6-5 and Kompelien and Mustard lost 6-1.
