The Estherville Lincoln Central girls picked up their first varsity win of the season with a 6-3 victory over Storm Lake on Thursday.
"We played extremely well in tough," said ELC coach Larry Kirchner. "The varsity was focused and wanted to win tonight.
ELC took four wins in singles.
At the top spot, Maddy Burns took a 9-6 lead over Kathy Lai and then pulled out an 11-9 lead after Lai had tied the match at 9-9.
Emily Jorgenson won 10-2 over Ellen Converse; Kaylee Nissen won 10-6 over Shelby Nelson and Taylor Nissen won 10-4 over Genesis Talamantes. In other singles, Emily Origer lost 10-2 to Dorothy Vang and Rachael Mueller lost 10-2 to Andrea Almanza.
ELC took the first two doubles matches with Burns and Jorgenson winning 11-10 (7-4) over Lai and Nelson. Kaylee Nissen and Taylor Nissen won 10-5 over Converse and Talamantes. In the other match, Origer and Mueller lost 10-4 to Vang and Almanza.
ELC didn't fare well on junior varsity. Doris Van der Laan lost 8-0, Scarlett Rose lost 8-3, Liz Herrick lost 8-2, Alyssa Olson lost 8-3, Allison Martyr lost 8-4 and Sam Tredway lost 8-1.
In doubles, Rose and Herrick lost 8-5, Van der Laan and Olson lost 8-0 and Martyr and Tredway trailed 4-3 when the meet was called.
"Our junior varsity played good and our five freshmen have really improved this season," said Kirchner.
