FORT DODGE - In a battle of Indians, Spirit Lake was out-matched by third-ranked Clarke of Osceola in a Class 3A state quarterfinal on Monday.

Clarke's Libby Bemis threw the 13th perfect game in state history and Clarke scored 13 runs on nine hits for the 13-0, three-inning victory over Spirit Lake.

Spirit Lake has a short turnaround as they play in the consolation bracket at 9:30 a.m., today, Tuesday) against the loser between Center Point-Urbana and Greene County.

Bemis struck out five of the nine Spirit Lake batters she faced. The other four outs were a groundout by Bailee Newman to third, a pop up by Caitlyn Roberts to the catcher, a groundout to Bemis by Maddie Richter and a line shot by Paige Peterson to first base.

While Spirit Lake committed two errors to start the game and allowed Clarke to score its first run, the third-ranked team in 3A pounded out 12 runs on nine hits over the next two innings.

In the third inning, Clarke had already scored one run and two walks given up by Spirit Lake ace Bailee Newman had loaded the bases. That's when Bemis helped her cause with a three-run double. Pinch runner Chynna Beydler advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a single by Devon Carson to make the score 6-0.

In the seventh inning, Kassidy Spurgin drew a leadoff walk, which was followed by doubles by Sydnee Redman and Allyson Deutsch with Deutsch's hit scoring both runs. Amanda Kindred drew the fourth walk of the game before Spirit Lake got an out. After a double steal to put runners at second and third, Kennedy Crees lined out to second baseman Carter Hassel. A bunt single by Vanessa Bakley scored one run and another run scored as Bemis reached on a fielder's choice with Bakley out at third, but a run scored. After an RBI single by Carson, Carley Robins sent the ball over the centerfield fence for a two-run home run.

Newman took the loss as she struck out one batter and walked four.
