Thumbs up, thumbs down

Estherville News

Thumbs up to members of Battery C, 194th Field Artillery, who met for their annual reunion last Saturday at the Estherville VFW Post 5588 trophy room. Their dedication to their country is to be admired. Their hopes are to add more members from beyond the Korean Conflict era in future reunions.

Thumbs up to Estherville Lincoln Central as it continues to test out one-on-one technology. It might seem like it's taking a little while, but it's really important to "work the bugs out" before distributing the Google Chrome devices to students. The key is that faculty will be thoroughly familiar with the devices before they're in the hands of students - and that's essential.

Thumbs up to Gary Phillips' environmental studies students who pitched in in a big way to help the Friends of Fort Defiance with clearing brush away from the edge of the west parking lot of the park. Phillips' students are instrumental in doing a lot of the "heavy lifting" when it comes to getting things done, and they're as responsible as anyone for the improvements the park has seen over the last eight years. As a result, traffic through the park has increased tremendously with lots of people riding bikes, hiking, jogging and enjoying nature.

Thumbs up to Iowa Lakes Community College on its farm expo held Thursday at the farm lab west of Emmetsburg. There aren't a lot of colleges - much less community colleges - that have a facility like the one at Iowa Lakes where students can learn and perfect modern farming practices firsthand. A big thumbs up also has to go to ag-related businesses who support the program. They make a huge difference.

Thumbs up to the Emmet County Conservation Board and the Emmet County Nature Center Foundation for holding Pioneer Day at Peterson Point east of Wallingford. If you haven't visited the historic farmstead yet, today would be a great day to do it.

Thumbs up to the Excel! Estherville Arts and Culture Committee for holding Gospel on the Square today, starting at 3 p.m.

Thumbs up to the Estherville Kiwanis which is holding its 75th anniversary celebration 5-10 p.m. tonight at Woody's Pizza in Estherville. If you're relatively new to Estherville and want to learn more about how this great organization promotes the community, stop on by tonight!
