Estherville News

Thumbs up to Emmet County engineer Walter Davis-Oeth as he does a great job in his new position. Walter brings a wealth of knowledge, having worked previously with the Iowa Department of Transportation and as assistant engineer for Pocahontas County. Walter enjoys golf, so if you're looking for a partner, give him a call.

Thumbs up to the Friends of Fort Defiance who held an informal get-together last Saturday to celebrate their accomplishments. They'd planned to hold their annual Fort Defiance Day event, but little things like trails, repairing a picnic shelter and other work around the park got in the way.

If you haven't been out to the park lately, go check out the fall colors. It should be beautiful this weekend.

Thumbs up to the Emmet County Board of Supervisors which is allowing two full weeks to consider a proposal to change youth detention service providers from Northwest Iowa Youth Emergency Services to Central Iowa Detention.

The board has shown a lot of time to deliberate on its decisions and should be commended.

Thumbs up to the Emmet County Wellness Coalition as it plans the Healthiest State Walk Wednesday, Oct. 8. Participants are asked to walk one kilometer.

Locations and times are:

n Estherville Public Library - 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Walk 15 minutes or longer anytime during these two hours.

n Avera Holy Family Hospital, 826 N. Eighth St. - 11 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. Come walk outside the hospital campus at either time.

n Regional Wellness Center, 411 S. 18th St. - Come walk anytime between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sign up at the front desk when you arrive.

Thumbs up to Sarah Ussery and Jolene Nichols for the great job they've been doing with the Pack Away Hunger project which sends packages of food home with selected kids over the weekend. This is a wonderful program that's making a difference.

Thumbs up as well to the Estherville Rotary Club for donating $250 to Pack Away Hunger. Maybe this can be a challenge to other service organizations to help as well.

Thumbs up to Kiwanis Aktion Club as its celebrated its third anniversary this past Wednesday.
