Step away from the screen

You wake up in the morning and the kids are watching SpongeBob.. You come home from work and the kids are watching SpongeBob again or Youtube videos on the computer on playing on an iPad.

Meanwhile, the adults are checking their email, Facebook and Twitter accounts constantly throughout the day.

Next week, let's all take time to limit, decrease or even cut out screen time during Screen-Free Week May 3-9.

Yes the kids will howl-and maybe even some adults-but getting out and doing something will benefit your health and attitude.

The "Screen-Free Week" website claims, "Excessive screen time is linked to poor school performance, childhood obesity, and attention problems. And it is primarily through screens that children are exposed to harmful marketing.

"Screen-Free Week is a fun way to reduce our dependence on digital entertainment, including television, video games, smartphones, tablets, and computers. It's a chance for children-and adults-to power down and reconnect with the world around them.

Emmet County Wellness Coalition challenges all to turn off their screens next week and participate in some of the activities they have planned-from visiting your local park on Sunday or attending the free swim and gym at the Regional Wellness Center on Tuesday.
