DES MOINES - Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire's Kolton Roth may have come up short of where he wanted to finish at the Class 1A State Wrestling Tournament, but a fourth-place finish will do for this year.
The junior, who finished fifth a year ago, definitely will be aiming even higher in his senior season as he wrapped up a 43-4 record this year.
After losing in the 132-pound semifinal Friday evening, Roth worked his way into Saturday's third-place match against unranked Cooper Siebrecht of Lisbon.
Siebrecht scored two first period takedowns with Roth escaping both times as the Titan wrestler trailed 4-2. The two wrestlers tied for points in the second period with Siebrecht recording two escapes and Roth getting the takedown. However Siebrecht was able to hold Roth down the entire third period to prevail 6-4.
Earlier Saturday, Roth advanced to the final with a pin over Josh Tibbits of Martindale St. Mary's. Tibbits had built a 10-5 lead through three periods. However, Roth recorded a takedown in the final 15 seconds and was able to turn Tibbits for the pin in 5:59.
On Friday, Roth started the day against Woodbury Central's Garrett Arment. Arment scored the first takedown, however, Roth come up with the reversal at about the 1 minute mark and had the pin recorded at 1:04.
That propelled Roth into a semifinal against seventh-ranked Blake Bauer of Southeast Warren/Melcher Dallas. Bauer held a 5-4 lead through the first two periods. An escape gave him a 6-4 advantage and then he scored a takedown to lead 8-4. Roth escaped immediately and despite two stalling points against Bauer, the SWMD wrestler held on for the 8-7 win.
Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire's Kolton Roth advanced through the first round of the Class 1A State Tournament on Thursday.
However, teammate Lucas Hoffman lost both his matches as the sophomore's season comes to an end.
Roth, ranked second at 132 pounds, took on Cory Stewart of Highland in his first match.
After placing fifth a year ago, Roth has been dominant this year with just two losses on the season. Roth went right to work on the Highland sophomore with a takedown and back points in the first 30 seconds. After giving up a penalty point late in the first period, Roth got that back with an escape in the second period. Another five-point move in the third period by Roth put the Titan wrestler ahead 11-1. He gave up a penalty point in winning 11-2.
Hoffman, making his first trip to state at 126 pounds, began his tournament day against Don Bosco's Logan Lutgen. Lutgen scored takedowns in the first and third period and a reversal in the second on the way to a 6-0 win over the Titan wrestler.
In the consolation round, Hoffman didn't fare much better against Alburnett's Ben Moyer. Moyer scored the first takedown in the opening period. In the second, he got a reversal with 37 left and a two-point nearfall with 3 seconds left. A takedown by Moyer in the third period completed the 8-0 shutout.
Hoffman ends his sophomore season with a 35-8 record.
