HULL - North Union dug an early hole against fourth-ranked Western Christian and it was too much to overcome in the second half as the Warriors' season ended with a 74-46 loss on Friday.
In the 2A regional semifinal, Western Christian hit a 3-pointer to start the game and raced out to a 10-2 lead. Samantha Hagedorn hit her first 3-pointer of the night and another basket with Chloe Lofstrom putting back a missed shot for a 7-0 Warrior run to get back within one, 10-9.
However, that would be the last points North Union would score in the first quarter as Western Christian ended the period with a 10-0 run to lead 20-9.
The Warriors had no answer for 6-2 post Ashtyn Veerbeek, who had 13 of her game-high 28 points in the opening frame. Verbeek outscored North Union by herself in the first half as she had 20 of her team's 43 points and Western Christian led 43-18 at the break.
North Union began to hit some shots in the third quarter with Bre Anderson knocking in a couple 3-pointers and Kate Anderson driving to the basket for some easy points. However, Western Christian still led by 18, 54-36, to start the final period.
Chloe Lofstrom led North Union with 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting and she also had nine rebounds. Kate Anderson finished with 12 points while Hallie Reese and Bre Anderson each had seven, Hagedorn had five and Rory McClellan had two. Kate Anderson had four assists and Bre Anderson had three.
Western Christian finished with a 40-26 rebounding advantage.
The Wolfpack also had 11 more shots than the Warriors as they shot 44 percent (26-of-59) from the field while the Warriors shot 35 percent (17-of-48). Erika Feenstra was the only other Western Christian player in double digits as she finished with 20 points.
North Union finishes the season with an 18-4 overall record. They graduate just one senior from the roster in Alexis Valvick, who has battled injuries the last two seasons.
