On Jan. 10, 1953, Joleen was united in marriage to Lloyd C. Petersen in Graettinger. Following their marriage, the couple began raising their family and initially made their home in Forest City and Sibley, for a short time. In 1956, they moved to Graettinger, and the couple owned and operated Petersen Insurance Agency. In her leisure time, Joleen enjoyed reading, playing cards, doing needlework, traveling and watching local sports, especially wrestling. The couple was very active in civic and community activities. Her greatest pleasure in life was spending time with her family.

Joleen was an active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Graettinger, where she taught CCD and participated in various church circles. She and Lloyd served as Grand Marshalls of the annual Graettinger Labor Day Celebration parade. She also received Supporter of The Year from the wrestling team in 2015.

Left to cherish Joleen's memory are her husband of 64 years, Lloyd of Graettinger; seven children, Mary (Doug) Herke of Emmetsburg; Barbara (Tom) Graber of Dallas, Texas; Lloyd Chris (Michele) Petersen, Jr. of McLean, Va.; David (Charlene) Petersen of Vienna, Va.; Michael (Dina) Petersen of Richmond, Va.; Jonathan Petersen of Graettinger; Anastasia (Eric) Kvam of Wildwood, Mo.; sisters, Jeannie Thomsen and Kay Thiel; brother Charles (Pat) Thiel; sister-in-law, Lois Graham; 21 grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She has been preceded in death by her parents; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Elnora and Alfred Petersen.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials be directed to the Graettinger-Terril School Foundation.
