The Estherville Lincoln Central School Board unanimously approved a $32.9 million budget for fiscal year 2017-18. The budget is a decline of $1.5 million from the current year's budget.

The budget includes a proposed levy of $16.59 per $1,000 of taxable valuation, which is less than the levy amount in the published budget, but about the same as the current year. The school district is using sales tax funds to minimize the local property tax obligation. Property taxes for 2017 are expected to be about $7,000 less than the current year to $5,927,124.

According to ELC superintendent Tara Paul, the Iowa Department of Management typically makes adjustments after all school districts have submitted their budget and usually the rate changes a little bit. However, the school district won't need to make any further changes as long as the rate is less or equal to the published rate of $17.00730.

In other business Monday, the board approved personnel changes, many coming within the athletics area. Activities director and dean of students Andy Umthun submitted his resignation effective at the end of this school year. Also, the board also approved the resignation of Tony Klein as girls varsity basketball coach while approving the transfer of Don Martindale from boys varsity basketball coach to girls varsity basketball coach.

Gable Bonner, who shared head wrestling coaching duties with Ethan Pierson during the last half of the 2016-17 season, was hired as head coach for next season while Pierson will be an assistant.

In other personnel changes, the board approved the hiring of Scarlett Thorston, high school English teacher, and Corey Fennell, middle school special education teacher associate as well as the retirement of Randy Hildreth, maintenance.

The school board also approved the 2017-18 school calendar, which includes in-take conferences on Aug. 23 with classes for all students starting Aug. 24.

The Christmas/New Year holiday break starts with a two-hour early dismissal on Dec. 20 with classes resuming on Jan. 3. Graduation is May 20 with the last day of classes on May 23.
