ELC sweeps doubles to down Spencer

Bottom doubles teams each win final two games to pull out victory

SPENCER - Tied 3-3 after singles play with Spencer, the Estherville Lincoln Central girls stepped up their doubles play and won all three matches to defeat the Tigers 6-3 on Thursday.

ELC won by the same score in the teams' first meeting of the year. But the Midgets had decided that dual early by winning five singles matches.

This time, the Tigers grabbed a couple extra wins.

ELC's top of the order did its work as No. 1 singles Kendall Evans won 10-2 and No. 2 singles, Josie Condon lost 10-1. But at No. 3, Brianna Fix lost 10-8 to Megan Huss and Scarlett Rose lost 10-4 to grace Ahern at the No. 4 singles.

Samantha Tredway moved up to the No. 5 slot and won 10-7 over Ally Schlaeger and at the No. 6 singles, Liz Herrick lost 10-6 to Morgan Fitzgerald.

In doubles, Evans and Condon dispatched Rausch and Schlaeger 10-1. Fix and Rose had to fend off a Tiger rally by Carpenter and Palmer as the ELC duo gave up a 9-6 lead. But tied at 9-9, ELC pulled out the final two games to win 11-9.

The No. 3 doubles team of Tredway and Herrick also had a comfortable 8-5 lead before Spencer's Huss and Ahern rallied to tie the match at 8-8. The ELC pair won the final two games for the 10-8 victory.

"I'm happy with the win," said ELC coach Larry Kirchner. "our two and three doubles struggled at times, but finished well and got the win.

ELC is home against Storm Lake today. The Midgets travel to Spencer on Wednesday for the Lakes Conference Tournament. Play begins at 9 a.m. at the tourney.

In junior varsity play, ELC lost 6-3. At the No. 1 singles, Alissa Olson won 8-2 and Shiloh Kirchner won 8-5 at the No. 6 singles. In other singles, Emily Herum lost 8-6, Jessica Wilson lost 8-4, Savannah Wilson lost 8-0 and Rhiannon Alvarez lost 8-3.

In doubles, Olson and Herum won 8-3 while Jessica Wilson and Savannah Wilson lost 8-2 and Alvarez and Kirchner lost 8-6.

In exhibition matches, Abbie Schmaus and Olga Martin-Felipe lost 7-6, Alicia Loera and Kaylee Molacek lost 6-1, Emma Hanson and Martin-Felipe won 6-3; Schmaus and Molacek won 6-3 and Dariana Diaz and Chiara Vanadia Bartolo lost 6-3.
