Midgets sweep series with Braves

The Estherville Lincoln Central Boys Tennis Team swept the season series with Cherokee by defeating the Braves 8-1 on Thursday.

The Midgets had won just 6-3 in the first meeting on April 17 while splitting singles play 3-3 and then sweeping doubles.

This time, ELC swept the singles matches and dropped just one doubles match in the win.

In singles play, Isaac Jorgenson won 6-0, 6-2 over Cale Pingel, Logan Newhouse won 6-0, 6-1 over Layne Reinhart, Trevor Friesner won 2-6, 6-2 (1-0) over Tyler Richardson, Toby Jensen won 7-6, 6-4 over Thadeus Booth, Michael Houseman won 6-0, 2-6 (1-0) over Brendon Sullivan and Jose Saavedra won 6-1, 6-4 over Matthew Stieneke.

In doubles, Newhouse and Jorgenson won 6-1, 6-2 over Reinhart and Richardson, Friesner and Houseman lost 6-4, 3-6 (1-0) to Pingel and Booth and Jensen and Saavedra won 6-2, 6-2 over Stieneke and Carson Mongan.

"I was very happy that we won in a variety of ways," said ELC coach Tony Klein. "Isaac, Logan, and Jose in singles and our No. 1 and No. 3 doubles teams all controlled their matches."

In junior varsity play, Ahries Nissen won 8-3 and JT Christensen won 9-7. In doubles, Nick McClurg and Edwin Morales lost 8-1.

"Ahries Nissen at JV No. 1 also controlled his match," said Klein. "Trevor, Michael, Toby in varsity and JT Christensen in JV all had some roller coaster matches and did a good job of executing in tight matches to pull out victories."

ELC returns to action at LeMars on Monday.
