Howard Croner Jan. 16, 1924 - May 5, 2017

Funeral services for Howard Croner, 93, of Estherville, will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at the United Methodist Church in Estherville with Pastor Cory Allard officiating. Interment will be at East Side Cemetery, Estherville, with military rites by VFW Post 3388. He passed away Friday, May 5, 2017, at Pearl Valley Nursing Home in Estherville.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Monday at the Henry-Olson Funeral Home in Estherville.

Howard Leroy Croner, the son of Grant and Mable (Jorgenson) Croner, was born on Jan. 16, 1924, in Richland, Wis.

Howard graduated from Estherville High School with the class of 1942 and attended college at Coe College graduating in 1944.

He served in the 8th Air Force as a flight engineer and top turret gunner on B-17 aircraft during WWII. Howard was part of the 452nd Bomb Group and the 728th Bomb Squadron. He received several awards and medals for his service including the prestigious Legion of Honor medal.

After serving in the Air Force, Howard worked in the grocery business opening up a new Swanson Superstore as the manager.

Later he sold Harvestore Silo Systems which allowed him and Emogene to travel all over the country, which they really enjoyed. He also worked at the Emmet County Veteran Affairs office as the Director where he retired to spend more time with his granddaughters.

Howard was united in marriage to Emogene Griffith on Sept. 16, 1946, at the United Methodist Church in Estherville. For hobbies he liked camping, fishing, and collecting coins.

He was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church in Estherville, VFW Post 3388 and the Masonic Temple.

Howard is survived by his sons, Jeff Croner and his wife, Rosemarie; Brian Croner and his wife, Annette; two granddaughters, Jessica Cherland and her husband Kevin; Lindsey Andrews and her husband Brandon; and two great grandchildren Nolan and Taryn Cherland.

He has been proceeded in death by his parents; wife, daughter-in-law Twila; two brothers John and Ralph Croner; and two sisters Ruth (Croner) Ellis and Gertrude Croner.
