Funeral services for John M. 'Jack' Spoo Jr., 89, of Barnette, Mo., formerly of Estherville, will be held 11 a.m., Monday, May 8, 2017, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Estherville with Pastor Thomas Marth officiating. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Estherville with military rites by VFW Post 3388. John died Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Versailles, Mo.

Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m., Sunday at the Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville.

John Spoo Jr., the son of John and Martha (Zerke) Spoo was born Feb. 18, 1928 in Estherville. He received his education also in Estherville.

John served in the United States Army doing truck and equipment maintenance from 1950 to 1952. John was united in marriage on May 23, 1953, to Clara Jean Thie at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Estherville. To this union was born six children: Jackie, Steve, Mike, Joyce, Marvin, and Susan.

John worked at the John Morrell packing plant in Estherville until John and Clara moved to Iowa Falls in 1965, where he did farm work for John Brass and was a truck driver for Kurtz trucking company. John then worked as maintenance crew for Farmland Foods for 21 years and retired in 1987 due to the plant closing, John then stayed to be night security for the plant. In his spare time, he mowed lawns for numerous people around Iowa Falls and drove for Dale Howard Chevrolet Garage. John moved to Missouri in 2004 to live with his daughter Susan.

When John was young he enjoyed roller skating, and listening to blue grass and polka bands play. He enjoyed playing his harmonica, and accordion. John was an avid sprint car, modified, street stock car racing fan and would drive out of state to watch the races. He also enjoyed collecting and tinkering with John Deere and Farmall tractors. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and Immanuel Lutheran Church.

John was preceded in death by his wife Clara Spoo in 1975; father John Spoo; mother Martha Spoo; brothers: Donny Spoo; Herbert Spoo; Raymond Spoo; Kenneth Spoo; sister-in-law's: Bev Spoo; Loretta Spoo; Dorothy Spoo.

Left to cherish John's memory are his children: Susan Lister of Barnett, Mo.; Joyce Allen of Cedar Rapids; Marvin Spoo of Iowa Falls; Mike Spoo of Des Moines; Jackie Fink of Hampton; Steve Spoo of Malvern. Eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Family requests that all memorials be given to Henry Olson Funeral Home.
