The 69th Annual Flight Breakfast continues a long-standing Estherville tradition.

Begun in 1948, the first flight breakfasts were held in August, but eventually moved to July. The first breakfast on the Fourth of July was held in 1971.

Traditionally the event has brought in planes from all over. While the number of planes arriving at the Estherville Airport has declined over the years, pilots still eat free while passengers receive a reduced cost.

As usual, the 2017 flight breakfast will be held from 7-11 a.m. Tuesday, the Fourth. Menu includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage and beverages. Cost is $7 for those ages 12 and up, $4 for children ages 4-11 and children under four eat for free.

The Estherville Chamber of Commerce organizes the event and receives volunteer help from community service organizations including Estherville Noon Kiwanis, North Star Nights Kiwanis, Estherville Builders Club, Estherville Rotary Club and the Estherville Wa Tan Ye Club.

The event includes several free activities for the kids including pony rides, face painting and temporary tattoos. There are also some giveaways for children including patriotic pinwheels and toy gliders.

Besides the opportunity to view the planes that come in, members of the Estherville Black Knights Car Club will have their vehicles on display. Also, the Estherville Fire Department will have its trucks there for visitors to view.

Those who attend the breakfast from 9-10 a.m. can listen to the Northwest Iowa Jazz Band.

Estherville Saddle Club members are in charge of parking and will direct visitors.
