Kolleen K. Sorum Jan. 4, 1937 - July 2, 2017

Kolleen K. Sorum, 80, passed away on Sunday, July 2, 2017, at her home over looking the North Shore of Big Spirt Lake in Spirit Lake.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 7, 2017 at the Schuchert-Lentz Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the funeral home. Kolleen was born on Jan. 4, 1937 in Lake City, Iowa, to Robert O. and Marie U. (Mowry) Shannon. She graduated from Lakefield High School in Lakefield, Minn. Kolleen was united in marriage to Merle Sorum on April 13, 1954, in Lakefield. She worked in the Data Entry Department for Iowa Lakes Community College for 25 years.

Kolleen was a kind an patient person who never had a bad thing to say about anyone. She had a very forgiving heart and accepted people for who they were. Her infectious smile and warm hugs will be deeply missed by those who were fortunate to receive them. She enjoyed challenging her mind doing puzzles, reading and playing games. She had a passion for cooking and finding new recipes to try. She cherished spending time with her family and enjoyed the companionship of her many dogs and cats over the years. Kolleen loved to visit with her neighbors and socialize at the VFW in Spirit Lake where she was a member of the Women's Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband Merle Sorum of Spirit Lake; four children John (Cheryl) Sorum of Mankato, Minn.; Sheryl Christensen of Lakefield, Minn., Jean Marie Smith of Spirit Lake; and Ronald Sorum of Houston, Texas; seven grandchildren, Jeff, Keith, Abbie, Joel, Alec "Al", Kellie and Skyler; two great grandchildren Mia and Roman; her brother Gary Shannon of Golden Valley, Ariz. and her broth in law Robert Maxwell of Seattle, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister Betty Maxwell.
