Public gets look at pool plans

Community surveys for new municipal pool going out

Shari Bisgaard said Estherville utilities customers should watch for the community survey going out in the mail around the end of this week.

The purpose of the survey is to collect residents' feedback on the plan for the municipal pool, especially the proposed location. Bisgaard said the committee heard support for both locations during Thursday's open houses.

Two possible locations are being evaluated: the green space between the Regional Wellness Center (RWC) and a space on the north side of Thoreson Park. The Thoreson Park location would raise the cost slightly due to the necessity of purchasing land. One advantage would be an added parking space, which would also benefit the ballfield. The space near the RWC would have the potential to share activities with the wellness center and Iowa Lakes Community College, members of the committee have said at previous meetings.

Cost estimates put the RWC location at $4.3 million and the Thoreson Park location at $4.9 million. Most of the project would be funded through a $4.1 million bond issue, which would cover the bricks and mortar of the structure. The remainder, funded through a capital campaign and grants, would cover amenities.

"It's important for citizens to fill out their surveys and return them by the Aug. 9 due date," Bisgaard said.

The pool committee will make a recommendation of the location for the pool to the city council based on the results of the survey, Bisgaard said.

The Estherville Pool Committee includes Parks & Rec Board members Gary Phillips and Joan Heckard and community members Cole, Bisgaard, Curt Liljedahl, Shannon Schiltz, Tasha Welch, and LuWanda Towell.
