WALLINGFORD - Over 40 area firefighters and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) took part in a live house burn Saturday in Wallingford. The event included 17 fire and emergency medical service vehicles.

Wallingford Fire and Emergency Medical Services conducted the training event at 202 Ridley Ave. in Wallingford.

According to Wallingford Fire Chief Jarrod Fischer, fire fighter trains incident command, live fire and fire behavior, air pack training, water shuttling and other fire-related training activities.

EMTs trained in EMS Fire Rehab and check all firefighters that worked directly with the house burn.

The event began at 7:45 a.m. and finished around 11:45 a.m. There were no injuries.

"Wind and weather conditions were in our favor today," said Fischer. "It was a nice day for our local fire department and EMTs to train and work together."

Fire fighters participating came from Estherville, Gruver, Armstrong, Graettinger, Superior, Ruthven, Dickens, and Sibley with one member from Mayetta, Kan. Ambulance service personnel assisting came from Wallingford, Estherville and Graettinger/Palo Alto County Hospital.

One challenge for this burn was to create a large fire in the house while saving the tall elm tree just next to the house. The elm is well over a century old, according to sources at the fire.

Firefighters trained the hoses over the house and to the tree, and as a result only a few branches were singed.

Earlier in the week, fallen branches were collected, as well as mattresses and other items to enhance the house fire.

"Thank you to all that could attend," Fischer said. "Thank you to the Lundgren family for providing lunch and Renae and Brian Behrends for making rolls and getting supplies."
