Cleaning up at city hall

Fire at Gardston closes city offices Thursday

October 27, 2017

A fire shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday sent two people to the hospital with smoke inhalation. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they evacuated the building and traced the fire's source to a recliner in one of the apartments, according to Estherville Assistant Fire Chief Clint Howard.

The occupant had evidently fallen asleep while smoking.

The firefighters extinguished the fire and ventilated the building, Howard said. The Estherville Fire Department was on the scene for about two and a half hours, and the building has heavy smoke and water damage.

With utilities due Friday, Oct. 20, and the city government website down, numerous residents paid their utility bills at the library Thursday.

The city offices opened as usual Friday morning after a day of cleanup.
