SMS Erickson retires from U.S. Air Force

Family members make trip to celebration

Senior Master Sergeant James M. Erickson, son of Steve and Mikki Erickson of Estherville, retired from active duty in the U.S. Air Force in July. His parents, all of his siblings, nieces and nephews, and his daughter made the trip to Alaska for his retirement celebration.

Erickson's last assignment was as Quality Assurance Superintendent for the 3rd Maintenance Group. He supervised 40 personnel in 16 Air Force Specialty Codes, and provided technical and procedural advice.

Born and raised in Estherville, SMS Erickson enlisted at the Sioux Falls Military Entrance Processing Station June 4, 1997 and graduated from Aerospace Maintenance Apprentice courses at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas in Oct. 1997. He worked a variety of aircraft maintenance duties throughout three permanent duty assignments to bases in North Dakota, Arizona and Alaska. He deployed to support Operations Southern Watch, Northern Watch, Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, Nomad Shadow, and Inherent Resolve.

SMS Erickson received the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Award, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, National Defense Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global Raw on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and Terrorism Service Medal, Nuclear Deterrence Operations Service Medal, Air Force Overseas Ribbon, Air Force Expeditionary Ribbon, Basic Training Honor Graduate, and Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon.

He earned his latest promotion to Senior Master Sergeant in August, 2014.

SMS Erickson's post retirement plans include more hunting and fishing, and more importantly more time with his daughter while continuing his aviation maintenance career in Alaska.
