Laker women extend streak to four games

Lakers win league opener

CRESTON - The Iowa Lakes women pulled away in the fourth quarter to win the Region XI opener 74-65 over Southwestern on Saturday.

After the Lakers took a 20-17 first quarter lead, the two teams played even through the second and third quarters with the Lakers leading 34-31 at halftime and 54-51 after three quarters, before outscoring the hosts 20-14 in the final frame.

Five Lakers finished in double digits, led by Mia Wassink with 25 points on 11-of-16 shooting to go along with 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. Calynn Jackson tossed in 14 points while Lemia Ntor-Ue and Marisa Ruiz each had 11 points and Marisela Perez had 10 points. Perez also dished out eight assists while Jackson had five and Ntor-Ue had seven rebounds.

"The team fought hard from the very beginning," said Iowa Lakes coach Ashley Martin. "I thought we came ready to play and were locked in and ready to go. It was good to see us fight through adversity. We continue to improve. I like our energy and focus right now."

The Lakers have now won four straight games and are 6-9 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. They travel to Boone on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. game against Des Moines Area Community College.

Lakers balanced in win

COLUMBUS, Neb. - With Wednesday's 69-65 victory over Central Community College, the Iowa Lakes women have now won three straight games to improve to 5-9 on the season.

The Lakers had a balanced attack for their second straight game with four players in double digits.

Mia Wassink led Iowa Lakes with 20 points and eight rebounds. Marisela Perez scored 14 points, Lemia Ntor-Ue had 12 and Marissa Ruiz had 11.

"It was a good win for the team tonight," said Iowa Lakes coach Ashley Martin. "I thought the girls shared the ball well and were very unselfish. This team continues to improve every day. I feel like we are in a good place as we enter conference play."

Iowa Lakes had 19 assists in the contest led by Perez with six and Ruiz with five.

Calynn Jackson tossed in seven points while Shai'anye Wesley had five. Jackson also had three blocked shots while Ntor-Ue had two.
