Statewide newspaper reader poll reflects Estherville News’ efforts to improve reader engagement, community service and outreach, and more

In January, the Estherville News invited readers to take our survey. In Thursday's newspaper, the results of that survey will be published. First, however, our newsroom thought it would help to share the results of a statewide newspaper readership poll published this week.

The graphic with this story illustrates some of the results. Most of the 2.4 million readers in Iowa still read print exclusively, but the hybrid of print and digital engagement is growing. Our newsroom is participating with Online News Association in developing our digital product to bring more and better news to your devices. The statewide poll found that 12 percent of Iowans read local news on their phone every day with a high number of those readers between the ages of 18 and 34.

Significant among the findings is that newspaper readership is high among all incomes and age levels. Twenty-one percent arrive at a newspaper website after another website redirects them. Our newsroom will develop more effective engagement strategies to reach more readers.

None of this will come at the expense of continuously improving content. Our readers' frustration with the typos and other slipups that have happened has been received and more time and repetitions of proofreading have been implemented.

At some newspapers, reader engagement is someone's full time job. From our newsroom, reader engagement will be a greater part of everything that happens.
