Funeral services for Douglas W. Grems, 70, of Estherville, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Graettinger with Pastor Chris Lang officiating. Military graveside rites by the United States Army Honor Guard and Estherville VFW Post 3388 will be at Graettinger City Cemetery, Graettinger. He passed away Saturday, April 28, 2018, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville.

Douglas W. Grems, the son of Merle and Ora (Rosburg) Grems, was born Nov. 30, 1947, in Estherville.

He received his education in the Estherville schools, graduating from Estherville High School in 1966. From 1967-1968, Doug served in the United States Army as a medic in Vietnam. He was awarded the Purple Heart. Following his honorable discharge from active military duty, Doug returned home.

Doug lived his entire life in Estherville. He married Theresa Clabaugh in December of 1974, in Estherville. Later, on June 8, 1980, Doug was united in marriage to Marie Westfall in Graettinger. Doug owned and operated The Bike Smith in Estherville for many years, both selling and repairing bicycles of all kinds. Doug was very active in Estherville community affairs. In his leisure time his hobbies included bingo, computers, fishing, collecting Eagles and the American Flag. Doug's favorite holiday was the 4th of July. His greatest pleasure in life was spending time with his family.

He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Graettinger, having served on the church council; he was very active in Estherville VFW Post 3388, where he was past commander and American Legion Post 91; a member of DAV (Disabled American Veterans) and a member of the Estherville Elks Club.

Left to cherish Doug's memory is his wife, Marie of Estherville; son, Don and his wife, Jessica of Larchwood, Iowa; three grandchildren, McKenzie, Kyler, Gunner; nephew, Lyle (Chelsea) Clarken and daughter, Harper; niece, Lilly (Ross) Moeding and son's, Elliott and Everest; niece, Dawn Campney-Bolhous and sons, Gregory and Robert; sisters-in-laws, Edith (Mike) Clarken of Estherville and Lori Westfall of Estherville; sister, Virginia Grems of Estherville; brother, Fred Grems and his wife Dee of Iowa City, Iowa and also other nieces and nephews.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Paula and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lyle and Alice Westfall.
