Evans picks up singles play

STORM LAKE - The Estherville Lincoln Central Girls Tennis Team split two matches to start this week.

On Monday, ELC edged past Storm Lake 5-4. On Tuesday, ELC lost 7-2 to Spirit Lake/Okoboji.

In Monday's win over the Tornadoes, ELC earned three victories in singles.

Kendall Evans won 10-1 over Serena Chaiyawong, Josie Condon won 10-1 over Jenny Almanza and Brianna Fix won 10-2 over Briana Soto.

In doubles, Evans and Condon shut out Chaiyawong and Jenny 10-0 and Fix and Herum came up with the key 10-5 win over Soto and Beauna Thammathai for ELC's fifth match win.

In other singles, Herum lost 10-8 to Natalia Garza, Abbie Schmaus lost 10-7 to Beauna and Savannah Wilson lost 10-3 to Kaying Vang.

In doubles, Schmaus and Wilson lost 10-8 to Garza and Vang.

In junior varsity play, ELC lost 6-3. In singles, Rachel Origer lost 8-1, Shiloh Kirchner lost 8-2, Jessica Wilson lost 9-7, Emma Hanson won 8-2, Olga Martin-Felipe lost 8-3 and Brenna Evans won 8-3. In doubles, Origer and Martin-Felipe lost 8-2, Wilson and Hanson lost 8-2 and Kirchner and Evans won 8-3.In exhibition play, Kaylee Molacek and Myley Welch lost 6-0, Carly Grange and Alicia Loera won 6-3 and Kaitlyn Olson and Claire Brandt won 6-1.

On Tuesday, ELC picked up a couple wins against Spirit Lake/Okoboji after being swept in the first meeting on April 12.

In singles, Kendall Evans dominated Casie Barba 10-1 and Evans and Josie Condon won 10-3 over Barba and Lauren Goth in doubles.

"Kendall played lights out and frustrated Casie," said ELC coach Larry Kirchner. "She and Josie did the same thing in doubles."

Kirchner said the rest of the team showed improvement by winning a few more games.

In other singles play, Josie Condon lost 10-1 to Ashley Thorn, Brianna Fix lost 10-4 to Goth, Emily Herum lost 10-4 to Anna Ascheman, Schmaus lost 10-0 to Izzy Backhaus and Savannah Wilson lost 10-1 to Marta Garcya.

In doubles, Fix and Herum lost 10-4 to Thorn and Ascheman and Schmaus and Wilson lost 10-2 to Backhaus and Garcya.

ELC hosts Cherokee on Thursday and travels to a tournament in Spencer on Saturday.

In junior varsity play, ELC lost 8-1 to SL/O with Shiloh Kirchner and Brenna Evans winning 8-6 at the No. 3 doubles. In other doubles, Rachel Origer and Olga Martin-Felipe lost 8-0 and Jessica Wilson and Emma Hanson lost 8-2. In singles, Origer, Kirchner, Hanson and Martin-Felipe all lost -0 while Wilson lost 8-3 and Evans lost 8-6.

In exhibition play, Carly Grange and Kaitlyn Pollock lost 6-1, 6-4; Dariana Diaz and Dania Ponce Diaz lost 6-2, 6-3; Julissa Diaz and Myley Welch lost 6-4, 6-0; Kaylee Molacek and Alicia Loera won 6-0, 5-3; Kaitlyn Olson; and Claire Brandt won 6-0; Olson and Rachel Origer won 6-4and Renee Fisher and Emma Ross lost 6-2, 6-1.
