Midgets win home tourney with ease

ELC limits Okoboji, Humboldt to one run apiece

After more than a week off, the Estherville Lincoln Central Baseball Team celebrated its return to the field with a pair of victories at the Midgets' home tournament on Saturday.

ELC made easy work of both Okoboji and Humboldt, winning by scores of 7-1 and 9-1, respectively.

Alec Heifner earned the pitching win against Okoboji. In five innings, he struck out seven batters, walked one and gave up one earned run on five hits. Hunter Wheatley closed out the final two innings, striking out three batters and walking three while giving up one hit.

The two teams were scoreless through three innings, with each team plating a run in the fourth inning. ELC broke the game open with five runs in the fifth inning and scored an insurance run in the sixth.

The Midgets finished with just five hits, but also drew seven walks and had five stolen bases. Evan Olesen was 2-3 with two RBIs while, Briar Rowley and Seth vaske each went 1-3 and Jacob Bosch was 1-4. Bosch, Blake Miller and Vaske each had an RBI.

ELC's offense took a bit to get going again in game two after Humboldt scored the first run in the top of the second inning. But the Midgets came back with three runs in the third inning and six in the fourth.

This time, the Midgets finished with 12 hits with Trey Jacobson going 3-4 while Rowley was 2-3 and Olesen and Bennett Loock each were 2-4 with an RBI. Also, Bosch, Lucas Gardner and Blake Miller each went 1-3. Miller had two RBIs while Bosch and Gardner each had one.

Rowley pitched four innings in the victory, giving up one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Evan Olesen pitched two innings, striking out three batters, walking one and giving up one hit. Jacobson pitched one inning and struck out one batter and walked two.

Both of ELC's games scheduled earlier last week were postponed to this upcoming week. ELC (16-2 overall, 6-1 in the Lakes Conference) starts the week with a scheduled home game against Storm Lake. The Midgets then host a make-up game against Spencer on Tuesday. On Wednesday, ELC is on the road against Spirit Lake and then the Midgets make up a game at Cherokee on Thursday.
