Estherville News

A traffic accident in rural Emmet County on Monday morning injured three people.

According to Emmet County Sheriff Mike Martens, at 11:04 a.m. a caller reported that a semi-truck and pickup truck had collided in the intersection of 410th Avenue and 130th Street. Upon investigation at the scene it was determined that a southbound 2008 Chevrolet pickup driven by Ethan Crees, 18, of Estherville entered into the path of an eastbound 2012 Mack semi tractor-trailer combination driven by Kenny Dietrich, 67, of Fairmont, Minn.

As a result of the collision, both vehicles entered the south ditch where the pickup truck overturned trapping the passenger Lincoln Coakley, 17, of Estherville in the vehicle. Coakley had to be extricated by the use of the "jaws of life." All three were transported to Avera Holy Family Hospital for treatment of their injuries.

Coakley was airlifted to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., for treatment of life threatening injuries. Crees was transferred to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., for treatment of his injuries while the driver of the semi-tractor was treated and released.

The Emmet County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by Estherville Fire and Rescue, Emmet County Emergency Management, Emmet County Secondary Roads, The Iowa Department of Transportation Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division and Estherville Ambulance Service.
