Estherville Lincoln Central and Spencer have played some close baseball games in recent years. Tuesday's game wasn't one of them.

The Midgets, ranked fifth in Class 2A, scored four runs in the first inning to make an easier night for ELC starter Evan Olesen. Olesen and the ELC defense allowed just one run in the second inning while adding a couple insurance runs in the third inning and punctuated the victory with a solo home run by Briar Rowley in the fourth for a 7-1 victory.

"They were one of the hottest teams in the area coming into tonight and we've had some tight games the last three to four years," said ELC coach Lee Evans. "Against a good hitting team like Spencer, Evan had all his pitching working."

Olesen struggled a bit in the first inning, throwing 25 pitches and walking two batters, but ELC held the Tigers scoreless. Spencer put together a double and a two-out single in the second inning to score their lone run of the night.

However the third time through the Tiger lineup, from the third out of the fourth inning to the second out of the seventh inning, Olesen and the ELC defense set the visitors down in order. Olesen recorded four of his seven strikeouts during that span.

Spencer leadoff batter Brady Kluender hit a two-out triple in the seventh, but the game ended when Gage Garnatz hit a soft liner back to Olesen.

Offensively, ELC went to work immediately, helped by a Tiger error. Trey Jacobson hit a grounder back to pitcher Kade Carpenter, who hurried his throw. Jacobson went to second on the play. Jacob Bosch followed with a single. Briar Rowley then came up with a hit to bring Jacobson home. Courtesy runner Noah Heifner tried to reach third on the play, but was tagged out while Rowley moved to second. Olesen helped his cause with an RBI single and then stole second base. He scored on a single by Lucas Gardner to right. Bennett Loock then hit the right-center field gap for an RBI triple, giving ELC a 4-0 lead.

After Spencer scored its run in the second inning, ELC went back to work in the third. Rowley led off with a single, stole second and scored on a single to right field by Olesen. Two outs later, Olesen scored on a hit by Loock, as ELC led 6-2.

ELC's last run came in the fourth inning, as Rowley rocketed the ball over the right field fence with two outs.

Rowley and Loock both finished 3-3 while Olesen was 2-4 and Bosch and Gardner each were 1-3.

ELC (18-5 overall), takes control of the Lakes Conference with just one loss. The Midgets were at Spirit Lake on Wednesday. ELC travels to Cherokee today and to Emmetsburg on Friday.
