SWEA CITY - Class 1A No. 7 North Union scored three runs in the first inning and the Warriors made that stand up for a 3-1 victory over No. 12 Woodbury Central on Friday.

The win propels North Union (25-4) into the Region 1 final against Newell-Fonda (24-13) at 7 p.m., today in Swea City. The winner will advance to the state softball tournament in Fort Dodge next week. Earlier in the season, the Mustangs handed North Union one its four losses, 4-0 on June 5 in Fonda. That's the only time the Warriors have been shutout this season.

In Friday's game against Woodbury Central, errors opened the door for North Union to score its runs.

Katelyn Thackery hit a one-out single and then Kate Anderson hit a ball to the Cadet shortstop. The shortstop flipped to second, but the ball popped out of the glove, as both Warriors were safe.

With two outs, Bre Anderson singled to center, driving in one run. The ball scooted under the glove of the Woodbury Central center fielder allowing courtesy runner Sam Nielsen to score. Bre Anderson was nearly to third base when the throw from center field went into the Warrior dugout. With the ball out of play, the infield referee gave Anderson home plate.

North Union didn't have a runner get past second base the rest of the night.

Meanwhile, Woodbury Central managed to have base runners each inning. The Cadets scored their run in the fifth inning. No. 8 batter Anna Bellcock led off with a single and leadoff batter Alexis Mandernach drew one-out walk. Lizzy Smith followed with a two-out RBI single to center field, but a groundout to Warrior shortstop Bre Anderson ended the threat.

Woodbury Central came up with a two-out single in the sixth inning, but starter kate Anderson recorded her eight strikeout to end the threat.

In the seventh inning, a pop up to center fielder Hope Steinberger and a groundout to shortstop Bre Anderson gave the Warriors two quick outs. Kate Anderson then gave up her third walk of the game and then a single to Smith. But one final grounder to Bre Anderson ended the game.

Kate Anderson gave up seven hits in the pitching win.

North Union had just four hits as Thackery, Kate Anderson, Rory McClellan and Bre Anderson each went 1-3.

North Union vs. Newell-Fonda preview

In the first meeting of these two teams on June 5, Newell-Fonda freshman pitcher Ella Larsen limited North Union to just three hits while giving up two walks and striking out six batters.

North Union's Kate Anderson struck out six batters and walked one while giving up five hits in that loss. Only two of the Newell-Fonda runs were earned.

The Warriors will look for their home field to give them an edge in today's game.

North Union coach Art Ingalls is in his 14th season as head coach of North Sentral Kossuth, North Sentral Kossuth/Armstrong-Ringsted and North Union. This will be his 11th regional final. He has a 5-5 record in the regional final game, winning each of the last three years in Class 2A.

Compared to last year's team, Ingalls noted he has a different second baseman, third baseman, one different out fielder and a new pitcher.

Kate Anderson has started 27 of the games this season. In 177 2/3 innings, she has struck out 220 batters, walked 70 and hit seven. Opponents are batting .217 this season against her. Anderson has a 1.62 earned run average.

As a team, the Warriors are batting .327 compared to .354 for the Mustangs.

Newell-Fonda has four players batting over .400 while sophomore leadoff batter Hope Steinberger (.471) is the only North Union player batting above that mark.
