In 1949, Jim was united in marriage to Harriet Reinhardt. Together the couple would make their home in Mankato for a short time before moving to Windom where Jim worked for a car dealership. Jim and his family then returned to the Gruver area where Jim farmed until moving to Beloit, WI, where he worked for Beloit Corp. for 14 years and also sold real estate. In 1969, Jim and family returned to Gruver and continued farming until 1975, when Jim opened the Way Out Western Store that operated in Armstrong from 1975 to 1980, and they then moved the store to Fairmont in 1980, and continued its operation until his retirement in January 2000.

Jim was an extremely active member of the communities that he lived in. While in Iowa, he was a member of VFW Post #3388 of Estherville and a member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church of rural Estherville where he served as President of Council, Call Committee Member, and Sunday School Treasurer. While in Fairmont, he was active at Grace Lutheran Church and was also a past member of the Retail Planning Committee of the Fairmont Chamber of Commerce.

Jim loved to work and took great pride in a hard day's work. In his spare time, Jim enjoyed visiting with family and friends and playing a friendly hand of cards. He looked forward to evening meals with his family where he enjoyed his meat and potatoes and looked forward to his plate of ice cream for dessert. Jim also had a passion for collecting coins, buckles and music.
