Collision claims life of Estherville man

September 26, 2018
Estherville News

An Estherville man was killed Tuesday morning when he was struck by an express van while standing next to his bicycle west of Estherville in Dickinson County.

The Iowa State Patrol says the accident happened shortly after 8:30 a.m. on County Road A22 near the county line. Emergency personnel from both Dickinson and Emmet counties responded to the scene.

The state patrol's report said 70-year-old Gary Long of Estherville was standing near his bicycle on the roadway when two vehicles approached from the east. The first vehicle served and avoided colliding with Long. However, 36-year-old Kory Doll of Estherville could not see Long ahead of the lead vehicle before it swerved. Doll was unable to react in time and his 2010 Chevrolet Express Van struck Long, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities blocked traffic for a mile along A22 from 330th Avenue to 340th Avenue. 340th Street is the dividing line between the two counties.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by the Dickinson and Emmet County Sheriff's offices, Estherville Fire and Rescue, Lakes Regional Ambulance and Jennings Tow and Repair.

Long's obituary can be found on Page 5 of today's Estherville News.
