ELC splits matches in final tourney

STORM LAKE - Estherville Lincoln Central wrapped up the regular season by posting a 2-2 record at the Storm Lake Tournament on Saturday.

ELC lost to Kingsley-Pierson 11-21, 21-12, 16-14, but then beat Storm Lake 21-12, 21-16. The Midgets then lost 21-7, 21-12 against Cherokee. ELC then had to play Storm Lake again and won 21-14, 21-16.

"Our energy level was low and we weren't communicating very well," said ELC coach Jean Jensen. "Communication is a big key to success in volleyball."

ELC's middle hitters led the attack for the tournament, as Lindsey Jensen recorded 17 kills and Sydney Swanson had 16. Also, Vanessa Woelber had 10 kills and Dania Ponce-Diaz and Kallie Dalen each had nine.

Brianna Fix had 47 set assists and Dalen had seven.

Ponce Diaz led the defense with 19 digs while Woelber had 15, Swanson had 13, Jensen had 12, Fix and Brenna Evans each had eight and Dalen had seven.

Serving, Evans was 35-of-38 with three aces, Jensen was 28-of-29 with two aces, Dalen was 20-of-21 with three aces, Ponce Diaz was 18-of-20 with an ace, Swanson was 17-of-21 with 11 aces, Woelber was 6-of-9 with three aces, Sam Norton was 8-of-10 and Kendyl Ruschy was 4-of-5.

ELC (17-13 overall) opens Class 3A Tournament play at Spirit Lake at 7 p.m., Wednesday.
