FORT DODGE - If you're going to run your best race of the season, it's best if you can do it in the biggest race of the season.

Estherville Lincoln Central junior Taylor Myers did just that, as he ran to a 10th place finish at the Class 2A Boys State Cross Country Meet at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge on Saturday.

Myers ran the 5K (about 3.1 miles) course in 16 minutes, 54 seconds-18 seconds faster than a year ago when he placed 24th.

"At one point, Kayla (Vermedahl, assistant coach) and I were yelling at Taylor from the sidelines," said ELC coach Connie Humble. "He (Taylor) smiled and gave us this look like, 'I got this coach.' He ran so relaxed."

Humble said Myers got off to a fast start.

"Taylor ran a perfect race," said Humble. "He knew he needed to get out so he wouldn't run in a crowd as he was in second going into the first curve. He then settled into his pace and ran 11th-13th most of the race. He passed a few before the final stretch and ended up 10th. Great end to a great season!"

Humble said Myers ran a 5K under 17 minutes on a flat course during the regular season, and she knew he was capable of accomplishing that feat at state.

"We did some pace work (prior to Saturday), but we laid off to keep his legs fresh," said Humble.

Garner-Hayfield/Ventura senior Reece Smith won the Class 2A race in 16:00.7 to finish 22 seconds ahead of George-Little Rock/Central Lyon's Joe Anderson.

The top 15 individual runners receive a medal for their efforts. Tipton won the 2A Team title with 72 points followed by Bellevue with 100 and Sioux Center with 102.
