Lakers win on the road

WORTHINGTON, Minn. - The Iowa Lakes women picked up a 71-61 win over Minnesota West on Saturday. win on the road over Minnesota West 71-61.

The Lakers trailed 21-16 after one quarter and 37-33 at halftime, but led 51-48 after three quarters and won the fourth quarter by seven points.

"I thought our effort on the defensive end in the second half was really good," said Iowa Lakes coach Ashley Martin. "We are a very young team and are learning how hard you have to play every possession. We are working on playing through mistakes and continue to grow. This coming week will present a lot of good challenges for the team. We will play three games in six days and all very good teams. I look for us to continue to improve and embrace these opportunities,"

Breanna Wendland led the Lakers with 23 points. Samantha Hagedorn tallied 17 points, Shareece Smith added 13 points, and Safiyer Coleman had 11 points.

Iowa Lakes (7-1 overall) are home at 5:30 p.m., today against the Dakota Wesleyan Junior Varsity.

Lakers fight off Gustavus Adolphus

The Iowa Lakes women fought off the Gustavus Adolphus JV 75-71 on Tuesday. Shareece Smith led the Lakers with 22 points and eight rebounds. Breanna Wendland added 20 points and Samantha Hagedorn added 11 points.

"We were a little flat tonight," said Iowa Lakes coach Ashley Martin. "We could never really find our rhythm but am proud of the kids and how they battled through adversity tonight. Always good to pull out a win on a night when we are struggling. The kids are learning how to win close games and this will be very valuable experience as we enter conference play,"

Iowa Lakes trailed 18-15 after one quarter, but led 38-31 at halftime and 54-46 after three quarters.
