Humboldt 45, ELC 29 ELC wrestles well in loss to Wildcats

Although open at four weights, Estherville Lincoln Central wrestlers did well in the season-opening dual against Humboldt on Thursday.

In the 10 contested matches, the Midgets won six with four pins. ELC was open at 106, 120, 170 and 195 and ended up with a 45-29 loss.

The varsity match started at 126 pounds and ELC's Jason Peta, ranked ninth at 120 pounds in Class 2A, built an 8-0 lead in the first period and then pinned Colby Clarken in 2 minutes, 35 seconds.

Freshman Zack Anderson (132) battled an up-and-down match against Jordan Jensen. Trailing 8-5 in the period, Anderson came up with the move to put Jensen on his back in 4:47.

At 138, Cruz Hernandez trailed by just a point, 5-4, heading into the third period when the Wildcats' Timmy Larson came up with an escape, takedown and fall in 4:49.

Jalen Tripp had one of the closet match of the dual against Tyler Vitzhum. Tripp was trailing 4-2 entering the third period when he came up with a reversal, then gave up an escape. He came up with the go-ahead takedown and held Vitzhum down for the 6-5 win.

The next two matches went Humboldt's way as Joey Busse defeated Taylor VanWyhe by fall in 1:42 and Royce Coakley lost 9-3 to Levi Naeve.

ELC came back in the next two contested matches. After a scoreless first period, Juan Diaz (182) came up with a sudden takedown and pin of Lucas Volf for the pin in 2:30.

At 220 pounds, ELC Kylan Fitzgerald and Humboldt's Colton Goodell both traded back points before Fitzgerald came up with a reversal and pin in 1:34.

At 285, Isaac Hanson couldn't quite match up with third-ranked Justin Jones and lost by fall in 1:14.

ELC ended the night on a positive note at 113 pounds, as Michael Houge earned a workman-like 4-0 victory over Gage Prenger.

ELC was scheduled to attend the Sergeant Bluff-Luton Tournament on Saturday, but didn't attend because of the impending snow storm.

ELC will host Lakes Conference foes Spirit Lake and Western Christian this Thursday and then travel to the Emmetsburg Tournament on Saturday.

In junior varsity action, ELC won three of four matches.

Chase Budach won a 2-1 victory in the second sudden victory. Nick Leonard came out on top in a seesaw battle with a pin in 4:53. Nick Egeland also came back to earn a pin in 4:40. Eli Hanson lost by fall.
