The Estherville Lincoln Central boys broke back into the win column with a 57-52 victory over Emmetsburg on Tuesday.

Will Larson led the way with a 28-point effort, but senior Blake Miller's 3-pointer from the corner with just over 2 minutes left in the game, sparked ELC down the stretch. His trey tied the game at 51-51.

Moments later, Alec Heifner was fouled and went to the free throw line. He made the first to give ELC a 52-51 lead and missed the second. However, Seth Vaske rebounded the miss and got the ball back to Heifner who hit a running short jumper to put ELC up 54-51 with 1:40 left in the game.

Moments later, Izaak Sander picked off an E'Hawk pass and was fouled going to the basket. He made one free throw and then came up with another steal on the defensive end.

Miller then went to the line for a one-and-one and missed, but Emmetsburg lost the rebound out of bounds.

After an E'Hawk timeout and with ELC in-bounding the ball under their own basket, Larson faked cutting one direction and cut hard to the basket where Vaske found him for the easy layup to put ELC up 57-52.

On the other defensive end, ELC was assessed a technical foul, but the E'Hawks could only make one free throw.

ELC failed to convert at the free throw line in the closing seconds, but the E'Hawks couldn't find the basket either, as the game came to a close.

Both teams struggled at the start of the game as well with neither team scoring in the first 3 minutes. However, Emmetsburg caught fire first and led 17-10 after the first 8 minutes. ELC battled back as close as two points, 23-21 on a basket by Brian Egeland. Larson scored the final seven ELC points of the half, including a late 3-pointer that had LEC within four, 32-28, at the break.

A low-scoring third quarter gave ELC a chance to battle back. ELC twice took a lead, but the E'Hawks led 42-40 heading into the final period.

For his 28 points, Larson shot 11-of-17 from the field, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range. He was 2-of-3 from the free throw line, where ELC struggled as a team, shooting 7-of-14.

Miller finished the night with nine points to go along with 10 rebounds and two blocked shots. Egeland contributed eight and Heifner and Sander each had six. Vaske, Sander and Heifner each had three steals.

ELC (2-7 overall, 0-4 in the Lakes Conference) wraps up the first half of the season at Terril today against Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire.

Huskies run past Midgets

The Estherville Lincoln Central boys couldn't get their shots to fall early while everything Jackson County Central seemed to fall through, as the visiting Huskies defeated the Midgets 73-41 on Monday.

The visitors scored the first eight points before Alec Heifner finally got a shot to fall through the hoop. The highlight of the first quarter was an Izaak Sander 3-pointer at the buzzer, but JCC led 20-7. The Huskies continued to make shots in the second quarter, scoring the first nine points on the way to a 38-12 halftime lead.

ELC sophomore guard Will Larson got hot in the second quarter, as the Midgets scored 16 points in the period. But the hosts had no answer defensively, as the Huskies scored 28 points in the period to lead 66-28 to start the final frame.

Larson was the only ELC player in double digits with 16 points, Seth Vaske had six points while Sander, Brian Egeland and Hogan Kriech each had three points. Heifner, Matt Christensen, Parker Rowley and Connor Strenge each had two points.
