Area sports teams return to action this week after the holiday break

Area sports teams return to action today and Friday, ending their holiday break.

The Estherville Lincoln Central Boys Basketball Team starts 2019 with back-to-back games, going on the road this evening to take on Pocahontas Area.

The Midgets (3-7 overall) will try for their third consecutive victory after ending 2018 with wins over Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire and Emmetsburg.

ELC has three players averaging double digits-Will Larson (13.9 points per game), Alec Heifner (10.1 ppg) and Izaak Sander (10.0 ppg).

The Pocahontas Indians (4-3 overall) are led by 6-2 senior Jace Davidson (26.4 ppg).

On Friday, the ELC girls (7-4 overall) return to action in a home girl-boy doubleheader in the Midgets' first meeting of the season with Spencer. Josie Condon leads the ELC girls (14.0 ppg) followed by Jaydan Nitchals (7.3 ppg) and Kaitlyn Tendal (6.5 ppg).

The Tiger girls enter the game with a 2-6 record while the Tiger boys are 5-3.

The Spencer boys are on a four-game win streak after defeating Spirit Lake (36-33), Sioux City North (63-41), Cherokee (74-45) and Emmetsburg (74-32).

Area wrestling teams also return to action this evening.

Estherville Lincoln Central wrestlers travel to Spencer this evening to face Lakes Conference foes Spencer and Cherokee. The Midgets will travel to a tournament in Sheldon this Saturday.

The North Union wrestlers open 2019 with a home meet today. Coming to Swea City will be wrestlers from Eagle Grove, Garner-Hayfield/Ventura and West Hancock.

The Warriors will be at the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Tournament on Saturday.

Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire wrestlers will compete for the first time in 2019 at the home tournament in Graettinger on Saturday.

Other area basketball teams return to action on Friday.

North Union hosts Garner-Hayfield/Ventura while GT/RA is at Manson-Northwest Webster.

Chloe Lofstrom leads the North Union girls (7-2 overall), and is averaging 22.8 points per game. GHV (5-4 overall) has three players averaging over 10 points per game.

The North Union boys (1-7 overall) will have their hands full with the Cardinals (6-3).

GT/RA (6-4 overall) will look to add to their win total against Manson-Northwest Webster (2-6).

The GT/RA boys (4-4 overall) will look to move above .500 against the Cougars (1-7).
