The Emmet County board of supervisors met Wednesday morning, the first business day of 2019 for its first session of the year.

The supervisors elected John Pluth as chair and Jeff Quastad as vice-chair of the board. There are currently four supervisors as Bev Juhl retired Dec. 31. A committee led by Emmet County auditor Amy Sathoff will decide whether to appoint a new supervisor or hold a special election to fill the vacancy. The supervisors themselves have no say in appointing their new member. The county has 40 days to seat a new supervisor. Forty days out from Dec. 31 would be Feb. 9. As that is a Saturday, Feb. 11 is the deadline. Emmet County citizens interested in an appointment or getting a possible special election ballot should contact the auditor's office very soon.

The supervisors also made appointments to boards and committees and allocated the second half of the fiscal year 2019 budget, which runs through June 30.

The supervisors also made plans to solicit competitive bids for an accounting firm to perform the county audit for the next three years.

The supervisors went into closed session for an employment matter at the end of its meeting.

The next meeting of the Emmet County board of supervisors will be Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 9 a.m. in the board room of the Emmet County courthouse.
