2019 Lakes Conference Wrestling Tournament Tripp paces ELC with second-place finish

Houge, Diaz, Fitzgerald all place third

SPENCER - A second-place finish by Jalen Tripp paced Estherville Lincoln Central at the 2019 Lakes Conference Tournament on Friday.

The Midgets placed sixth overall in the seven-team league with 117 points.

Three other ELC wrestlers-Michael Houge (113), Juan Diaz (182) and Kylan Fitzgerald (195)-finished third.

Tripp's night began with a pin against Storm Lake's Nick Olesen in 2:39 in the quarterfinal, followed by a 14-9 decision over Cherokee's Hunter Shawn in the semifinal. In the final, Tripp faced Spirit Lake's Isaac Dixon and fell 13-4.

Houge had a bye in the quarterfinal, but then lost by fall in the semifinal. He came back in the consolation bracket with a pair of pins, the last coming against Daniel Hinds of Le Mars in 5:45 for third place.

Diaz also had a bye in the quarterfinal and lost a tough 3-2 decision to Cherokee's Treighton Schubert in the semifinal. Diaz came back with a 10-4 decision against Spencer's Samuel Brandt and then won 3-2 over Robert Sadoski of Le Mars in then third-place match.

Fitzgerald won by fall in the quarterfinal, but lost 18-6 to Mason Mohr of Le Mars in the semifinal. In the third-place match, Fitzgerald pinned Spencer's Zach O'Clair in 5:59.

Placing fourth for ELC were Chase Budach (145) and Nick Leonard. Both went 2-2 on the night and lost their respective third-place match by fall.

Zack Anderson (132), Eli Hanson (160) and Isaac Hanson all placed sixth. Jaciel Castro (106) and Garrett Paulson (170) both placed sixth.

ELC returns to Spencer this Saturday for a Class 2A Sectional Meet.

ELC had one wrestler competing in the Lakes Conference Junior Varsity Scramble on Friday. Raul Diaz went 1-2 in his bracket and placed third.
