He received his education at Swea City High School. Don served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

On June 25, 1952, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Carr. The couple made their home in Estherville and Don was employed with John Morrell for 23 years. Don also worked at Avera Holy Family Hospital for 13 years. Don enjoyed square dancing, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Green Bay Packer fan. Don had a passion for sports and a unique desire to share his talents. For many years he coached the 7th and 8th grade basketballs teams at St. Patrick's School in Estherville. He also coached A.A.U. boy's teams. The boys played hard and had a deep respect for their coach, Don. Don received the Rousher-Evans Award in 1991, for outstanding and dedicated service to students and athletes in Iowa by the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association. Don loved helping others, was a handyman and was always there to help change a flat tire or jump a dead battery, always with a smile. Most important to Don was spending time with family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Don was an active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Estherville, where he belonged to the Knights of Columbus. For many years he also volunteered his time at St. Patrick's Cemetery marking out graves and maintaining the grounds.
