Donald LeRoy Syverson, the son of Norman and Velma (Fisher) Syverson, was born May 5, 1935 in Estherville, Iowa. On Sunday, March 10, 2019 at the age of 83, his short battle with lung cancer took him from us. He was surrounded by his loving family at Valley Vue Care Center in Armstrong, Iowa.

He received his early education in the Estherville school system and graduated from Ceylon High School in 1955. While growing up his family nickname was "Sonny."

Don served in the United States Army in the 82nd Airborne Division from 1956 until 1959 as paratrooper even though he was afraid of heights. The pay per jump was worth it and allowed him to go for his favorite meal of spaghetti.

On June 13, 1959, he was united in marriage to Jeanette Clabaugh in Fairmont, Minnesota. He stated that Jeanette was "very pretty" and knew she would always be a part of his life. The couple made their home in Estherville until July of 1973 when they moved to an acreage near Huntington. He farmed there with his wife Jeanette by his side until a recent move to Spring Creek Assisted Living in Armstrong, Iowa.

Don was a wonderful father to his three girls, Donnette, Sherry and Teresa. The family spent many hours around the supper table and playing cards.

Don worked at Golden Sun Feeds, retiring after almost 40 years. He also helped placed ties as a young man for the Rock Island Railroad and spent numerous years helping his family with farming. He was a farmer at heart!

Don was a very private and quiet man but had his witty moments of zinging humor. He loved visiting the casino, woodworking and repainting things. He loved feeding his cats and the color red for his International tractors. He spent many evenings with the newspaper and a bowl of ice cream in his lap.

He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Estherville.

Left to cherish Don's memory are his wife, Jeanette; his three girls, Donnette (Dennis) Petersen of Phoenix, Arizona; Sherry (Bret) Mace of Estherville; Teresa (Brian) Johanson of Swea City; five grandchildren; Drew (Krystie) Petersen of El Paso, Texas; Danielle Petersen and Brandon Hester of Scottsdale, Arizona; Stormie Johanson of Davenport, Iowa; Cole Mace and Jeanette Govern of Spencer, Iowa; Brock Mace of Cedar Falls, Iowa and sister, Beverly Steinberger of Spirit Lake, Iowa.

Preceding Don in death were his parents, sister, Evelyn Thorsland and other family members.
